VISION TO REALITY STEM
Through the V2R STEM youth will increase their interest and knowledge about STEM careers in the region through highly interactive workforce development and career exploration activities that will give them an “in your face” exposure to the STEM industry in our region.
V2R STEM is a multi-layered approach designed on best practices and proven models for STEM career exploration and engagement. The model follows recommendations outlined in the “Defining Youth Outcomes for STEM Learning in Afterschool,” study by the Afterschool Alliance and STEM and Afterschool program, as well as utilizes the Dimensions of Success indicators of STEM program quality.
The program outcomes are to increase youth’s
- active participation in STEM
- ability to productively engage in STEM processes of investigation
- ability to exercise STEM-relevant life and career skills
- awareness of STEM professions
Each session is comprised of three segments: workforce development, career exploration and hands on activities.
The workforce development segment focuses on improving work and social skills proficiencies. Concentration will primarily be requirements for STEM related careers. The segment is a combination of both lectures and interactive activities. Additionally the segment will illustrate how academic experiences and skills (high school and post-secondary education) correlate to the workplace.
The STEM career exploration segment helps youth explore the region’s STEM careers. Activities will include assessments (interests, values, and personality), researching careers, and physical and virtual career tours. In addition youth will have an opportunity to interact with professionals in STEM related fields through in house or on company site presentations.
The hands on activity segment help youth experience what it’s like to be in a STEM career. Youth will complete easy, quick hands on activities that correlate to their STEM industry of interest. The activities are selected from best practices for experiencing the world of STEM.
A final activity allows youth to showcase their STEM abilities. Participating youth form teams to compete in the V2R STEM Skills Competition. The competition challenges are both mentally and physically stimulating. The competition is an exciting combination of Jeopardy, Survivor and In it to Win it. The program cumulates with recognition of youth’s growth and development.
The V2R measureable outcomes are based on the recommended youth outcomes for STEM learning as presented in the Afterschool Learning Alliance study. A matrix has been develop to track youth progress.
ROLE OR EMPLOYERS AND PARTNERS
Employers and partners play a huge role in the program. Following best practices for engaging professionals in the field, V2R will involve them in a variety of ways. Through an already established network, DeLoJe will engage employers and partners as role models and career mentors; volunteers for programming – presenters, activity facilitators, hosts for tours or job shadowing; Judges for the competition; and ultimately, internships or employment opportunities.
